Something that never ceases to amaze me is the willingness of other people to novate the responsibility for certain aspects of their lives to other people.
I am confronted by this behaviour most often in my role as a strength and conditioning coach. Many people who hire me believe that it is MY responsibility to get them into shape. Sorry folks, that’s not correct. It is definitely YOUR responsibility to be fit and healthy. I am a person who can equip you with the right knowledge or provide you with the right tools, but YOU are the one who has to do the work.
“But you’re the coach!” you cry.
“But its your life.” I’ll retort.
Just like I’m not responsible for your happiness, your bank balance or any other situation you may find yourself in during YOUR life.
Recognise that the life situation you’re currently experiencing is a direct result of the choices you’re making and your willingness to fully accept responsibility for it all – good and bad. Your life is driven by YOU.
Accepting this fact could be one of the most empowering actions you ever take. You’ll find it enormously difficult (dare I say impossible) to make any kind of positive and lasting change in your life if you’re expecting someone else to do it. Its up to you. You’re in the driver seat.
I had a conversation with someone the other day, in a similar vein, and they remarked that, “Ignorance was bliss.” Ah, no my friend, it ain’t. Ignorance will cost you. Ignorance robs you of your ability to make smart decisions. Ignorance is lazy. Worst of all, ignorance diminishes your capacity to take responsibility for yourself.
Your life is your responsibility. And if you don’t take my word for it, I’m sure there are plenty of other people out there who can help you 😛
